Quintessence with Coupled Scalar Fields
We discuss the dynamics of a quintessence model involving two coupled scalar fields. The model presents two types of solutions, namely solutions that correspond to eternal and transient acceleration of the universe. In both cases, we obtain values for the cosmological parameters that satisfy current observational bounds as well as the nucleosynthesis constraint on the quintessence energy density.
متن کاملQuintessence without scalar fields
The issues of quintessence and cosmic acceleration can be discussed in the framework of theories which do not include necessarily scalar fields. It is possible to define pressure and energy density for new components considering effective theories derived from fundamental physics like the extended theories of gravity or simply generalizing the state equation of matter. Exact accelerated expandi...
متن کاملNonlinear perturbations of cosmological scalar fields with non-standard kinetic terms
We adopt a covariant formalism to derive exact evolution equations for nonlinear perturbations, in a universe dominated by two scalar fields. These scalar fields are characterized by non-canonical kinetic terms and an arbitrary field space metric, a situation typically encountered in inflationary models inspired by string theory. We decompose the nonlinear scalar perturbations into adiabatic an...
متن کاملScalar-Tensor Gravity and Quintessence
Scalar fields with inverse power-law effective potentials may provide a negative pressure component to the energy density of the universe today, as required by cosmological observations. In order to be cosmologically relevant today, the scalar field should have a mass mφ = O(10 −33eV), thus potentially inducing sizable violations of the equivalence principle and space-time variations of the cou...
متن کاملComparison of Boltzmann Equations with Quantum Dynamics for Scalar Fields
Boltzmann equations are often used to study the thermal evolution of particle reaction networks. Prominent examples are the computation of the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma after relativistic heavy ion collisions. However, Boltzmann equations are only a classical approximation of the quantum thermalization process which is described by the so-calle...
